After getting a replacement light bulb, my spotlight is once again functional. This time it found fellow Decadent Publishing author TL Reeve and Private Wolf, part of the Black Hills Wolves shapeshifter series. After reading this tease, I can’t wait to read it. Curious? Read on!

Shawn Blu walked into Los Lobos Café and spotted his aunt at a table near the far wall. In front of her sat a paperback book and a mug, along with a pastry. Behind the counter, Ero took the order from a new female. Her long dark hair was pulled into a messy bun, and her gray eyes glittered with—arousal? If the other wolf noticed, he appeared indifferent to it. Oh well. Bypassing his normal routine, of ordering coffee and Danish, he marched over and sat at the table where his aunt waited. Fern glanced up at him. Her warm, affectionate smile greeted him.

“Good morning, Auntie.” He leaned in and kissed her cheek. “That twinkle in your eye says you’re up to no good.”

Fern laughed and patted his hand. “I have a job for you.”

A job. Why hadn’t she mentioned it last night when he came over for dinner?

Why did they have to meet in the café? “Okay. What is it?”

“Well, technically, it is two jobs….”

“Okay.”

Ero approached with a cup in one hand and a sweet treat in the other. “You didn’t order. I see why now.” He grinned then winked at Fern.

“I didn’t want to interrupt your time with Cynthia,” Shawn teased. “She’s interested in you.”

“Don’t I know it.” Ero frowned. “But there’s…the spark’s not there.” He glanced at his brother, Luc, who sat in his usual spot.

“Say no more, I understand.” He did, too. They were waiting for their perfect mate. Might be a while, but Shawn had a feeling it would happen. “Thanks for the coffee.”

“You’re welcome.”

Taking a sip of the piping-hot brew, he waited for Ero to leave before returning to the conversation with his aunt. The way Fern watched him—assessing him—left him uneasy. “Should I be afraid of what you’re going to ask of me?”

“Never,” she assured him. “In fact, you’ll win tons of brownie points with Miss Claire if you do this for me.”

Celebrating Lucky Traveler

Lucky Traveler releases today! As a writer, launching a project into the wild is both exciting and scary and Lucky Traveler was a bit of a departure for me. Why? For one, it’s short. I tend to write short, but not novella length. The character development process is different, but I enjoyed it so much, I’m working on some other shorter works.

Second – it’s sexy. When I first started writing, the idea of writing a sex scene made me nervous. It still does, but I let my characters dictate the story and Logan and Keira had some specific ideas about what they wanted to do.

No name. No picture. Nothing else to tell her what Madame Eve had planned. Did her date have the details of where they were going and what they were doing? And what did she mean by when you are ready to proceed?

This had to be some kind of mistake. The building didn’t look like any kind of residence she’d seen. Well, not in the traditional sense.

Maybe her date worked here? She read the cream-colored card again and flicked her thumb back and forth across the edge. With a sigh, she tossed it onto the passenger seat. Okay…right address. So, what are you waiting for? This is what you’ve wanted your entire life.

She opened the door and slid out. A nurse, pushing a wheelchair with a double amputee who wore dog tags, approached, stopping her cold. Attractive. Ice seemed to grip Chris, gluing her soles to the parking lot. She wanted to jump back in the Jeep and run, but, no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t move, let alone breathe.

“Good morning,” the nurse said and continued on by.

“Morning.” The tension leaked from her shoulders, flowing away. Chris blinked and then twisted to watch them go. The woman in bright-pink scrubs wheeled her patient toward a mini-park off to the side, without looking back. No. The nurse didn’t look like what she’d described as her ideal woman. Too…girly. Silly to assume her date would come out to meet her with a witness. Oh hell. She hadn’t even made it to the front door, and she’d already freaked. This didn’t bode well at all.

She ran her sweaty palms down the front of her denim shorts and took a deep breath, replenishing her courage. Time to stop pretending—hiding. “I can do this.” Chris fisted her hands at her sides. A public location.She surveyed the area, taking it all in. Everywhere around her—people.Seriously? She’d wanted to take baby steps into the same-sex dating world, come out of the closet slowly. Had to. Her career depended on it, and she’d told Madame Eve she needed to be discreet.

So why here? There couldn’t be a more public place. Her stomach churning, she swallowed the lump forming in her throat. Why am I doing this?

No matter what people said, the support gays and lesbians received from the stars and media didn’t mean anything in small town America. In her world, kindergarten teachers weren’t lesbians. She’d struggled with this tug-of-war between her professional and personal life for four years, until her sister came right out and told her she knew.

Talking with Jessica Subject

I’m heating up the blog with a visit from fellow Decadent Publishing author Jessica Subject.  I did a lot of reading before I wrote my forthcoming 1Night Stand and Jessica’s Beneath the Starry Sky was a standout. I loved how she blended  science fiction and real world concerns. When I learned Beneath the Starry Sky was becoming an audio book, I had to invite Jessica over.

1. Let’s play “dump the purse.” What’s in yours?

LOL Do you really want to know? There is, of course, my wallet, keys, and sunglasses. I usually keep some pads in there, in case of emergency, whether my emergency, or a friend’s. One never knows. I also have mints from Boston Pizza, pads of paper, pens, old cards from flowers that my husband sent me, lip gloss, gum, old shopping lists, receipts, my author business cards, and a couple book postcards. Oh, I have my night driving glasses, a nail file kit, and a hair band.

2. We’re out at a bar, what are your characters drinking?

Josh would have a beer, whatever is on tap. Tamara would have a Merlot. If wine is not available, she would have a Long Island.

3. When you heard your characters come to life in someone else’s voice, what was it like?

Honestly, it was the strangest thing ever. Narrators (and readers alike) don’t always emphasis the same things I would. Names may be pronounced differently, and secondary characters might get a different personality than I’d intended. Luckily, by the time I had Beneath the Starry Sky produced as an audio book, I’d had three others produced, and knew what to expect. It’s definitely exciting by the time the final recording is ready.

4. “Beneath the Starry Sky” is one crazy hot story, and funny to boot. You are one of my go-to authors, which got me thinking, who are some of yours?

Thank you so much, Lola! I get a kick every time  someone says that my stories are funny. I never intend them to be humorous, but it always seems to slip in somehow.

Hmm, I have a lot of go-to authors, and I’m always trying new authors as well. The first author who came to mind was D.L. Jackson. Kate Richards, Kacey Hammell, Kelley Armstrong, Beth Revis, Sharon Lynn Fisher, Andrew Fukuda, and Rick Yancey would be on the list, too.

Spotlight on A Model Hero by Sara Daniel

“What do you say?” he asked.

Yes, take me. “I say, why me?” Her voice rose with an embarrassing squeak as she struggled to compose a rational argument and remind herself she was in her office, just feet away from her employees who’d never seen her anything less than one hundred percent professional. “I get why you went out with me on Saturday. You’d shut yourself away from the world, and I was the first woman to find you. But you’ve been reminded you can have Jamie or anyone else you crook your finger for. Why do you still want me?”

His gaze softened with a tenderness that pierced her heart. He brushed his thumb along her cheek. “How could I not want you, Gretchen? You’re smart and funny and beautiful and not afraid to let a guy who has no idea what you like order for you on a first date.”

Talking with Sara Daniel

I’m delighted to have fellow Decadent Publishing author Sara Daniel visiting today.  Like my last guest, Tara Quan, Sara penned a modern fairy tale. Read on to learn more about Sara and Once upon a Marriage and be sure to scroll all the way down or a link to a giveaway.

What inspired you to write Once upon a Marriage?

My favorite school assignment ever was modernizing and retelling a fairy tale (sophomore English – Aced it AND got extra credit – Thanks Ms. Seckler!), so when Decadent Publishing put out the call for a retelling of a Grimm’s Fairy Tale, my hand immediately shot in the air.

Tell me about your favorite place to write. What makes it special?

I have a giant comfy chair in my living room with a view out my front window where I do most of my writing, although in perfect weather I’ve been known to take my computer outside. An outside view is a must for me, and did I mention how comfy my chair is?? I often feel stiff after sitting at a desk or table for a couple hours, but I could sit and write in my chair all day (and often do).

That sounds like a nice place. Do you listen to music when you write? If so, what?

I write in silence, and if the house isn’t quiet enough, I keep a pair of noise-silencing headphones (from a NASCAR race!) nearby. I’m happiest and most productive when I’m alone with my thoughts.

When you’re not at the races, how do you make time to write?

I write when my kids are in school. Everyone leaves the house, and I make the long commute (LOL!) to my favorite chair. Now that it’s summer, I try to keep the same routine, but I also accept that I need to be flexible for my family and to recharge my muse. My summer productivity is always lower than in the school year.

Mine too! What is your favorite part about being an author?

I get to live out my dream of writing stories all day while having the flexibility of being there for my family whenever they need me.

I love that too. Dessert time! Give me your “either—or” answers

• Chocolate, fruit or other? Chocolate
• Warm or cold? Warm!
• Buttercream or fondant? No frosting, please!
• Cookies or brownies? Tough choice, but I’m going with cookies.
• With nuts or without? Usually without, but sometimes nutty is better.

Talking with Tara Quan

Hi Lola! Thank you so much for interviewing me today. I’m really excited to show off the cover for my upcoming Beyond Fairytales release, and I can’t wait to tell you all about it.

On that note, let’s get started. What inspired you to write this book?

Lots of different things. First off, this book was written in answer to Decadent Publishing’s submissions call for fairy tale adaptations, and I was assigned The Owl by Brother’s Grimm. At around the same time, I was feeling a bit glum about having to leave D.C., so I decided to channel my energy into writing a romance set in the capital area. Dulcis in fundo (Last but not least), my Italian class did a field trip to the National Gallery, which turned out to be the perfect place to set the opening scene of my story.

What is your favorite part about being an author?

Well, I love writing, so there’s the perk of actually liking one’s job. On top of that, it’s the most mobile career imaginable. My husband’s employer requires us move to a new country every now and then (as I type this interview, the movers are packing us up for the 4^th time in 5 years). I’ve been very lucky at finding work in both the UAE and Pakistan, but job-hunting every time he gets new orders isn’t a viable long-term solution. Being an author means making a lot less money, but it’s a steady career as opposed to an unending chain of short-term positions. I can certainly relate – although my husband’s job keeps us domestic.

If your hero were babysitting my kids (age 6 & 10) what would the night be like?

Hmm… Zack is a bit of a geek, so they’d likely be playing video games into the wee hours of the night. Since your kids are on the younger side, he probably won’t go for a first-person shooter, but there are always party games like Rock Band, Guitar Hero, or something on the Kinect/Wii.

We’re at a bar with your hero and heroine, what are they drinking?

Zack is a beer guy. Having gone to MIT for college, he’s developed a taste for the various permutations of Samuel Adams, the seasonal ones in particular. Maya Jain, the heroine, was inspired by an Indian friend of mine. She prefers wine with food, but at a bar she’d go for a Belgian Ale such as Stella Artois.

Last but not least, it’s dessert time! Give me your “either—or” answers

Chocolate, fruit or other? – This is a tough one. The part of me trying to be healthy will have to answer: fruit (persimmons and mangoes, if at all possible).

Warm or cold? – I get cranky when the temperature deviates from a comfortable, non-humid, 68-75F. But if I had to pick between the two evils, I’d go with warm (I tend to hibernate in winter).

Buttercream or fondant? – Buttercream for sure!

Cookies or brownies? – Cookies (Oatmeal Raisin, please).

With nuts or without? – Depends on the nut, but without is always the safer choice.
