Ready to get Sidetracked?

Big-city businessman James Fordham has a giant problem – small town artist Claire Evans and her tiny trains.

The rumors are true – I have a new holiday themed rom-com book coming this October.  This story makes me smile and I hope it will bring a dose of joy to you as well.

When out of town corporate raider, James Fordham, cancels an Ohio energy company’s holiday train display as a way to cut expenses and turn a profit, he has fire Claire Evans, whose kisses are the best entertainment he’s found.

Claire Evans, miniaturist artist wants nothing more than to protect her grandfather’s legacy – the annual small scale train display. To save their trains and the town, Claire and her fellow citizens must prove to James the real value of the miniature trains has little to do with the bottom line and everything to do with heart.

Inspired by screwball comedies, Sidetracked readers should expect a little sizzle, poor decisions, mischief, a few train puns, and a whole lot of heart. To get release day info, follow me at Bookbub or sign up for my newsletter.

Talking with Kristina Knight

Kristina Knight stopped by to tackle the tough questions and share a look at her latest contemporary romance, What the Heiress Wants. Her playlist is perfect reading music.

9781440595776whatheiressWhat inspired you to write What the Heiress Wants? What the Heiress Wants is the second in my Billionaire Cowboys trilogy, and all three books were inspired by Las Vegas. I love Las Vegas, and RadioMan and I try to go every couple of years. I had this idea about three brothers who were gamblers, but not in the casinos…and Jase, Connor and Gage took the books from there.

What types of books do you enjoy reading? What is on your nightstand? – I read all kinds of things. Right now I’ve got Nora Roberts’ Obsession on my nightstand, along with an autobiography of Rick Springfield, and Every Time We Say Goodbye by Liz Flaherty.

Tell me about your favorite place to write.  What makes it special? – I think I’m going to have a new favorite this summer – the swing in our backyard. We just picked it out a couple of weeks ago and I just can’t get enough of it. So me, the iPad and a long afternoon to write sounds heavenly.

Do you listen to music when you write?  If so, what? – I do! And it depends on where I am in the writing process. Drafting calls for light jazz or classical music, after the draft is in I figure out a playlist (they’re usually quite eclectic!) that fits the books – I’ll have songs that remind me of the hero, the heroine, the major story arcs…My playlist for What the Heiress wants had 20 songs and they ranged from 80s hair bands to Dierks Bentley and back around to Smokey Robinson.

Dessert time!  Give me your “either—or” answers

  • Chocolate, fruit or other? – Can I get chocolate with fruit? I could really go for some chocolate covered strawberries right now
  • Warm or cold? – Warm! Flip flop weather for the win!!
  • Buttercream or fondant? – ….hmmm…I’m gonna say neither. Whipped icing is my fave!
  • Cookies or brownies? – brownies, with a little powdered sugar sprinkled over the top
  • With nuts or without? – without. I like my nuts to be solo. And that sounds a little dirtier than I intended. An occupational hazard of writing romance.

The Billionaire Cowboys trilogy by best-selling author Kristina Knight continues with What the Heiress Wants.

Denver publishing heiress Miranda Clayton craves more from life than society parties and shopping sprees, but her tycoon father refuses to take her seriously. Her solution? Beat him at his own game by going to work for his top competitor, Connor Reeves, in Las Vegas.

Connor isn’t fooled by Miranda’s new plan for a second. He knows exactly who she is; what he doesn’t know is why she’s pulling him into her games. After their first meeting, Connor knows what he wants – Miranda in his bed! But the more he’s around his new vice president, the more he wants something deeper than a short-term fling. The question is does the lady want Connor – or his business?

Spotlight on Galen Rose

Today my spotlight shines on Galen Rose and her contemporary romance, A Place to Rest my Heart. For a limited time, you can pick up this delightful book for less than a dollar.

no crimson PTRMH imageSean Muldoon knows trouble when he sees it, and he sees it in Laney Murphy the minute she passes out in his arms. He thinks she’s a con artist, and she thinks he’s just like everyone else, arrogant and judgmental.

Much to Sean’s dismay his family is determined to help Laney and he just doesn’t understand why. That is until he gets to know her and realize under her tough exterior beats a heart of gold.

Want a sample before you buy? Read on for an excerpt from Galen Rose’s A Place to Rest my Heart.

“Move, Ace. You’re in my way.”

“Sweetheart, I haven’t even begun to be in your way.” He leaned against the doorway, arms crossed. “I will not allow you to hurt Tommy or Molly, so why don’t you pack up your schemes and dreams and hit the road. You won’t get a penny from them. I’ll see to that.”

I have never been known for having an even temper but I’ve worked hard to keep it under control, but not this time.

“Look, asshole, I don’t have a clue what you’re talking about. You’re delusional if you think I have any intention of taking a dime from Tommy that I haven’t earned. I pay my way!”

“Sure you do. I ran your fingerprints, darlin’, right off your juice glass from this morning. You’ve got a nice background there, Laney. Pandering? Breaking and entering? Those are great ways to pay your way, huh? You got a scam to bilk Tommy, but you might as well hit the road running, babe,” He smiled, acting quite pleased with himself. “Tommy and Molly all too often fall for the sob story and feel sorry for the strays that come along.”

I felt that to my core. Stray? Felt sorry for me? The last thing I needed was anyone’s pity.

But right at the moment the only thing I felt was the need to strike back at Sean. “Stray, huh? “Weren’t you a stray too? They feel sorry for you then? Take you in on pity?” I saw his jaw tighten and knew I’d scored.

“Leave now and I won’t tell them your plans to take them for a ride,” he growled.

“My plans? You’re so sure about my plans, huh? Wow, you sure are smart, Sean Michael Muldoon. You ran my fingerprints and so now you know my whole life story in one fell swoop? Look, you arrogant ass, you have no idea what my life has been like and a couple of knocks on a police sheet only tells you what your narrow-minded brain wants to hear. But for your parents’ sake, I’ll go and save you the trouble of making a fool out of yourself.”

I tossed the case of champagne at him. He let out a curse, as he lunged to catch the box and I shoved him hard when I went through the doorway. I heard him hit the shelves, rattling bottles and swearing a blue streak. I heard the case of champagne hit the floor with a thud and the sound of breaking glass.

I know I could have done worse and to this day I still have no idea why I didn’t kick him in the nuts, or flat out deck him. I should have done something other than leave. I wanted to do anything other than leave, but I couldn’t bear having to own up to some of the missteps I had made long ago.
A Place to Rest my Heart is available now at Amazon

About the author: Galen Rose lives in the Santa Cruz Mountains and is an avid cook, gardener and traveler. Over the years, she has repaired bikes, been a telephone solicitor, a day care aide, managed the order department of a family law publishing firm and for nine years ran her own on-line Celtic jewelry and gifts store. Oh, and you can add in wife and stay-at-home-mom too. A Jill of many trades but not one true color for her parachute, until the day she really sat down to write and kept on writing and hasn’t stopped.

Spotlight on Kristina Knight

My spotlight is up and running for 2016 and today it shines on Kristina Knight and her latest release, What the Bachelor Wants, which is Book 1 of the Billionaire Cowboys series.

What the Bachelor Wants

bachelorVegas Nightly just named local property developer Gage Reeves its Sexiest Bachelor, not a title he likes, especially when it brings showgirls, local socialites and entertainers to his doorstep 24/7.

Callie Holliday has a plan: make her day spa the hottest ticket in Vegas. The problem? She’s saddled with a bad location and a zero account balance. A chance meeting with childhood friend Gage Reeves offers one solution: setting up shop at his new development.

Gage’s ordered life twists out of control when he begins to fall for his childhood friend because Callie is determined to keep things business like. She doesn’t like to depend on people, but Gage makes it hard to remember exactly why…

Excerpt:

Standing still in an elevator really shouldn’t be this hard. The mirrored doors had swooshed closed about five seconds before. Callie stood beside him, leather attaché slung over her shoulder and hands clasped before her, watching the numbers count down, down, down.

Gage resisted the urge to pull at his tie. But counting down the numbers on the elevator screen wasn’t nearly as interesting as watching Callie.

He’d been watching her, goading her a little, since he’d realized it was her across the table from him and not a stranger. Not that he could call Callie a friend when he hadn’t spoken to her in ten years. She was an acquaintance. That was a good word.

The fact did nothing to temper his response to her. She’d heated up the office. Now she was turning the elevator into a veritable inferno. From the top of her oh-so-blonde head—had her hair always been this shimmery?—to the tips of her oh-so-red toenails, she made him want things.

Drinks on the beach. A quiet dinner by candlelight.

He’d never thought of her this way in the past. She was just Callie. The girl who helped him master calculus, cheered at his football games, and rode her favorite horse beside his lake on hot summer days. The gorgeous woman standing beside him was so different from the buddy he remembered.

The old Callie was smart and tenacious, which made the new Callie a good investment. The old Callie was dedicated to her work—another mark in New Callie’s favor. The biggest mark in her favor, though, was the empty space in his new development. A space that would be perfect for Callie’s business, while also filling a hole in his.

Plus, under the polish of her suit, he could still see his friend. The mistiness of her gaze when she talked about her parents leaving town, the fierce grip when she squeezed her hands together as she made her pitch.

“Have you been to a Rebels game since you got back?” he asked.

Small talk. He hated small talk.

“I’m not much for basketball.”

“It’s actually still football season, but the first preseason basketball games start in a couple weeks. We should catch a game sometime.”

Shut up, Gage. Just shut up. He didn’t ask business associates out. What the hell was wrong with him?

“Oh.”

“You love football.”

A smile spread across her face. “Mostly I loved the space that cheerleading took up in the ‘extracurricular’ column of my college applications.”

“Oh.” How had he never caught that she wasn’t into sports?

Better question: how had his radar missed Callie, in general, all those years ago?

StartMeUpWant a taste of Book 2?   Start Me Up:

She sat back, crossing her arms over her chest. “You can’t be serious.”

His posture was the exact opposite of hers. Everything about him was opposite. Where she wore a pretty Stella McCartney blouse and prim pencil skirt, he wore ripped jeans and a tight black tee. Her strappy Manolos hadn’t a single scratch. His Dr. Martens had to be from 1999 and looked like they’d cleaned up after one too many groupies in the green room.

You’re in control here, Nina. You’re the professional. He’s the client. Shoo him away like the ass he really is.

Oh, but what a fine ass he has, the part of her brain she was definitely not listening to today said.

“I assure you I’m serious. I need a non-clingy, well-proportioned date for a gala fundraiser in two days and I’d prefer she have no illusions as to what this is about.” He sat forward in his chair and Nina was sure she saw his abs ripple. She caught her breath and then forced her gaze from the spectacle and back to those blue-blue eyes. And promptly forgot to breathe again. “The money raised will keep music programs in at least fifteen local schools. To keep the cash coming I need the headlines to be about the event, not my social life.”

“Then you should go alone.”

“Going alone will keep the gossip rags talking. What I need is a pretty date for a one- night-only performance.”

Nina blew out the breath she’d been holding. She didn’t believe for a second this was a mercy date situation. More like a mercy hookup. She didn’t do hookups. Her business set up marriage minded people who were matched based on an algorithm her aunt developed ten years before. An algorithm that had made the company a go-to in Los Angeles.

She shot a glance out the window at the press corps on the sidewalk below her window.

Well, until this morning, anyway.

“I think you’ve got my firm confused with…something else entirely, but for future reference—” she typed a few words into the search engine on her computer and flipped the screen to face him “—I am a matchmaker. A noun, meaning one who arranges relationships or marriages.” She opened the next tab and gestured to the computer screen. “I am not a madam, although madams are also nouns. There is a very large, very cavernous area between matchmaking and houses of prostitution.”

Spotlight on Dani Jace Hot as Blazes

Hot as Blazes takes over my spotlight today. I couldn’t be happier for Dani Jace and her scorching contemporary out now. I was lucky enough to catch a glimpse of this work when Dani and I both part of Chesapeake Romance Writers and I am thrilled to share a peek with you today.  You can bet I’ll take a virtual vacation to the Outer Banks with this one.

When the Heat Gets Started

JoAnn Mercer was on the verge of surfer stardom when her career took a nosedive thanks to a backstabbing ex. Now she’s back home in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, staying clear of men, desperately in need of a job. Joining the local firefighting squad seems like the perfect solution, until she realizes one of her coworkers is an old crush…

It Will Never Stop

Ray Andrews never runs away from a fight. He served his country in Iraq, and he’s battled more fires than he can count. But what he can’t fight is the desire burning between him and JoAnn Mercer. He’s wanted Jo for as long as he can remember, but a promise made years ago has kept them apart. Finally free of obligations, Ray is ready to prove he’s the only man for Jo. But after the trauma of her past, can he convince her to love again?

Ready for the excerpt? Of course.

The dated Shaker-shingle beach house brought Jo Mercer to tears. She’d doubted ever seeing it again. After parking, she wiped her eyes and patted the dash of her dad’s classic Bronco her brother, Bobby, had left at the airport for her.

As she stepped out of the truck, a warm Outer Banks sea breeze kissed her cheeks. Dune grasses waved in welcome. Home. The only sweeter thing would have been a husky Dahlin’ from Bobby’s best friend, Ray. Unfortunately, her stealth homecoming prevented opportunity. Ray was the last one she wanted to know her big California surfing dream had ended like a movie of the week crime drama.

By the dunes sat a black H1 Hummer, chrome surf rack glittering in the afternoon sun. It displayed a firefighter license plate. Probably one of Bobby’s friends. She climbed the steps to the house, unlocked the side door, and stepped inside.

The fragrant cedar aroma drew her into a familiar bare bones décor consisting of a big screen TV, over-sized recliner, and sofa with a couple of end tables. She skimmed her fingers along the worn flagstone fireplace mantle before reaching her father’s flag. So hard to believe he was gone.

Outside, the shower door slammed. Jo secured her sunglasses and headed down the deck stairs. Broad back muscles stretched the Nags Head fire department logo on the man’s shirt as he racked his surfboard. Behind a pair of wraparound shades, he eyed her. “Bobby’s gone for the weekend.”

Her dad had been a captain for Nags Head. “Yeah, I know. How were the waves?”

His smile seemed familiar. He whipped off his shades and closed the distance. “Jo!”

“Ray?” She nearly toppled from her platform flip-flops as huge biceps wrapped her in a bear hug that left her toes dangling. His touch shot through her veins like straight whiskey.

“Bobby didn’t mention you were coming home, Dahlin’.” His pale blue eyes held her captive and his southern twang brought her home faster than a jet from LAX.

The sexy sound of her pet name made her stutter. “Ahh, it was last minute.”

Well over six foot, her high school surfing buddy had grown into a man with a body rivaling most NFL tight ends. He squinted and cocked his head.

With her lifelong fantasy standing so close, coherent sentences failed her. She poked the firefighter seal over his rock hard pectoral. “So what’s this?”

“I thought Bobby told you?” He smiled lazily, running a hand over his close-cropped hair. “Couldn’t play lifeguard forever.”

She might be if her luck didn’t change. Nobody had told her Ray became a firefighter. Guess he didn’t want to worry her after he made it back from Iraq. The same reason she didn’t tell him about her trouble in California. “Awesome, Cappy would have been so proud.”

At her father’s nickname, hurt flashed over his handsome face. He flipped her sunglasses to the top of her head. “I was beginning to think I’d never see you again.”

“Me too.” She avoided his gaze as tears welled.

He tamed a wavy strand of her hair with gentle fingers. “Figured you would have cut it by now.”

The sensual gesture set off a resurgence of feelings she didn’t want to revisit. Hope welled in her chest, but she crushed it with memories of past heartache. He’d never see her as a woman. “Nope, still Bobby’s tomboy sister.”

“I never saw you that way, Jo.” His gaze softened with his tone.

He’d always had the ability to strip her of pretense with barely a word. She fought for control. “ Okay, your surf buddy then.”

“Always.” He smiled then checked his diver’s watch. “Damn, I’d love to stay and catch up, but I’m picking up a partial shift. You’re here for a few days, aren’t you?”

Guilt heated her cheeks. She hadn’t wanted him to know of her arrival and now he wanted to spend time with her. “How about some cools ones after some waves?”

A little boy grin lit his tanned face accentuating his stubble. He winked a sexy blue and pecked her cheek with a kiss. “Sweet.”

As his beastly SUV disappeared from the driveway, her heart finally slowed to a normal rhythm. He never knew how much she’d loved him during high school nor  would he ever. Besides, how would he feel when he learned the truth as to why she’d been kicked off the surfing team? She slipped her cell from her pocket and dialed a California number.

“Santa Cruz probation office,” a receptionist answered.

Talking With: Liv Rancourt

Thanks so much, Lola, for the chance to be a guest on your blog. I had to answer six questions – can’t color in the lines, either – but I’ll try to keep my answers short. 😉Between the Sheets_highres cover

What inspired you to write this book?

Between the Sheets is a story about the shenanigans at a weekend retreat for music teachers. Most of the significant people in my life are musicians, and some of the most influential teachers I know teach music, and the story is my way of saying kudos to them. I did my best to create characters who are real and human and sexy (some of them, at least), who also happen to be music teachers.

What types of books do you enjoy reading? What is on your nightstand?

I’m all about the romance, with some creepy paranormal/horror mixed in. Recent favorites include The Quick by Lauren Owen (shivery fun!), Liberating Lacey by Anne Calhoun (title = goofy/Hunter = HOT), and A Private Gentleman by Heidi Cullinan (fabulous historical m/m action). Last night I started Charlaine Harris’s new one, Midnight Crossroad, which features one of the minor characters from the Harper Connolly series. Only about a third of the way through, but it’s too much fun so far!!

Do you listen to music when you write?  If so, what?

Sometimes, not always. I don’t create an individual soundtrack for each book, but I do usually have Pandora playing, and I’ll often identify a theme song for whatever I’m working on. For Between the Sheets, the theme song is something bluesy and rocking, like Tom Petty’s American Girl or maybe Tumbling Dice by the Rolling Stones.

What is your favorite part about being an author?

Making shit up!!

Excuse my outburst, but I love to let my mind wander and dream up new ways of messing with my characters. The getting it down on paper thing is a bit more challenging, but it feels good when it’s done.

If a celebrity did the audio book reading, who would you pick and why?

In my dreams, Benedict Cumberbatch and Orlando Bloom would wrestle for the right to do the narration, because they have such lovely….voices.

We’re at a bar with your hero and heroine, what are they drinking?

Randy’s got some history with the demon drink, so he’s having Coke. Maggie’s got a beer, because she’s that kind of girl. She also plays first base on her coed softball team, and her favorite band is Albannach (Scottish drums and pipes). Randy thinks bagpipes are hard to take at the volume Maggie likes to play them, but he also thinks she’s the prettiest thing he’s seen in a long time, so he keeps his mouth shut. He does sometimes turn the stereo down when she’s not looking….

Dessert time! Give me your “either—or” answers

  • Chocolate, fruit or other?
    • Duh, chocolate.
  • Warm or cold?
    • Warm, as in on-a-beach warm.
  • Buttercream or fondant?
    • Fondant.
  • Cookies or brownies?
    • Cookies. I have a short attention span, and there are more varieties.
  • With nuts or without?
    • Mostly without, though I do make exceptions.

Thanks again, Lola!

You’re welcome.  I had a chance to read Between the Sheets and loved it.  For readers wanting more, here’s the blurb.

Between the Sheets_highres coverLife for music teacher Maggie Schafer has been full of flat notes lately. Sick of being single and celibate, she vows to get her groove back at the upcoming Western Washington Choral Directors Annual Retreat.

Too bad the only guy who seems interested is a pompous dork who thinks he’s God’s gift to women—and the music education world. When he gets a little too arrogant and crosses boundaries, gorgeous pianist Randy Devers swoops in to run interference. After sharing a shockingly hot kiss in front of the whole conference, Maggie and Randy come up with a plan to pretend they’re dating.

However, the more time they spend together—and the more physical their “pretend” relationship gets—the more she wonders if there could be anything beyond just smoking chemistry and a friendly agreement between them.

Maggie’s got history, Randy’s got baggage, and they’ve got a weekend to get their rhythms in sync and figure out how to turn their solo lives into a beautiful duet.
